Hangjiao #3 Solar Flare Pepper Seeds

In 1987 Jiang Xingcun, a scientist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discovered that sending vegetable seeds including chilli seeds into space can increase the mutation rates by hundreds of times. This method resulted in increased size of the chillies and improved yield. The reason for the space programs were to find a solution on how to feed China’s growing population. Since that time, China has sent more than 400 plant seed species to space.

The Hangjiao 3 is also known as Solar Flare. It is an amazing looking chilli variety and it grows to about 50-60 cm in a pot. The pods can get up to 20 cm long and 2 cm wide. Some are straight and others curls.

The pods start off a light green and end up a warm orange colour, when they are mature.

This chilli is excellent in any cooking, great for pickling or in a stir fry. When you dry the chillies they get hotter, therefore a great chilli for powder.
